Yuhuatai Martyrs Cemetery

Theme: Inheritance of revolutionary spirit

Profile: Yuhuatai was the Martyrdom place of Chinese communists and patriots during the new-democratic revolution. From 1926 to 1949, on the eve of Nanjing’s liberation, tens of thousands of martyrs were killed here, including major CPC early time leaders such as Mr. Deng Zhongxia and Mr. Yun Daiying, founder of China Northeast United Resistance Army Mr. Luo Dengxian, and He Baozhen, wife of Comrade Mr. Liu Shaoqi. For the time being, there are 1,519 identified martyrs and many more martyrs whose identities remain unknown.

To commemorate forerunners and inspire forthcoming generations, after the founding of new China, Nanjing Municipal People's Government built Yuhuatai Martyrs Cemetery at the original site of Yuhuatai. After seven decades of development and construction, a memorial building complex has been completed with the central axis of the central memorial area of Yuhuatai Martyrs Cemetery (MartyrsSculptures, Yuhuatai Martyr Monument, Reflection Pool, screen walls carved with China National Anthem and Internationale, memorial portrait sculptures, memorial bridges, Yuhuatai Martyr Memorial Hall, Zhonghun Pavilion), as well as tombs of identified martyrs, East Martyrdom, West Martyrdom and Young Pioneer Square. Collectively, these building complexes have created the rich commemorative atmosphere and magnificent space effect.

Nowadays, Yuhuatai Martyrs Cemetery has become a national level museum and be listed as Key Nationally Protected Cultural and Historical Site, National-Level Martyr Memorial Site, National Civilized Unit, National Demonstration Base for Patriotism Education, National Outstanding Unit of Off-campus Education for Juveniles, National Training Base for Clean Government, National Revolution-themed Tourist Spot and Communist Party Spirit Training Base in Jiangsu Province.
