About GLOW Eindhoven

GLOW is a light art festival in the public space of Eindhoven. The light art festival takes place every November. In 15 years, GLOW has evolved from a recurring, single week event to a cherished Eindhoven citizen. One that’s active, entrepreneurial, looking for new doors to open every single day.

Previous years, each edition around 35 light art works by national and international light artists were displayed in the city and connected by a walking route. GLOW attracts many visitors. Going from 45 000 visitors in 2006 to over 770 000 in 2019.

Aftermovie GLOW 2020

While life was totally turned upside down by corona, the GLOW organization faced a new challenge for the 15th anniversary, the 2020 edition of GLOW. The desire to create something special was major. But so is the challenge. The organization decided to go for it - without knowing at the time what kind of event could be organized - and whether it could take place at all. But the goal was crystal clear: ‘a call to connect’.

Unlike previous years, GLOW 2020 was not a route with various light artworks, but one city-wide project with three central elements! It was called ‘Connecting the Dots’.

First, the creation of a sea of beautiful red dots floating throughout the city. 1,000 LED-powered lamps, designed by light artist Ivo Schoofs, spreading light inside and out. Second, over 20,000 lamps made by the city’s residents and around the rest of the world, hung in their windows at home. A project of 20,000 artists, led by designer Hugo Vrijdag. The result is a sea of metaphors upon which anyone, and everyone, can project their thoughts about a person, a dream, a vision, an opinion or an idea.

The third element of this unique artwork was a spectacular blue night sky – a blue dome projection by Finnish light artist Kari Kola. An up-lifting warm-blue blanket that wrapped around and embraced you.

Partnerships & GLOWlabs

GLOW has a group of returning partners, but also various partners each edition. It is always a combination of the municipality, the business community, educational institutions and artists. The majority are local partners.

At GLOW there is room for innovative, unique works created in Eindhoven. In GLOWlabs (young) Eindhoven talent, engineers, designers, institutions and residents collaborate on innovative light artworks based on a particular theme. It is the culmination of one, two or even more years of working, experimenting and perfecting together.
