Perth is the capital city as well as business and culture center of the State of Western Australia. It is Australia’s fourth largest city with a population of about 2 million. Perth is a well-known livable city with great social welfare benefits.
Nanjing and Perth have been engaged in exchanges and collaboration in such areas as education, culture, economy and trade since the two cities established sister-city relationship in May 1998. Perth presented to Nanjing a sculpture titled “Harmonious Rhythm” in 2012, which has been placed in Nanjing 1912 Block. The two cities initiated “Picture Yourself in Perth” in 2012, a youth exchange program under the framework of sister-city cooperation. Participants are expected to post self-made photos on social media and answer questions related to Perth and winners will get the chance to go to Perth for studying and touring for about ten days. The program has been held five times, providing over forty Nanjing middle school students with the opportunity to experience life in Perth. In April 2018, middle school bands from Perth visited Nanjing and held the first “Nanjing International Student Music Evening” with Nanjing counterparts in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the sister-city relationship. There have been mutual visits by delegations between the two cities since 1998, furthering exchanges in fields such as economy, trade, medical care, culture and education.
