Located at the confluence of Volga River and Kotros River, Yaroslavl is the administrative center of Yaroslavl Oblast, about 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow. The city has an area of 170 square kilometers and a population of 590,000. Yaroslavl is a transportation hub where highways, railways and waterways meet, making it an important industrial hub. It is not only the largest and most dynamic city on the "Golden Ring of Russia", but also an important port city on the Volga River.
